>>mark:good morning top stories we are following on this friday june 28th. bart union members have officially given the 72-hour notice for a strike. that could come as early as monday. we'll tell you what could negotiations are not reached before then. pride weekend is just one day away here in san francisco. police are addressing safety concerns and how they will deal with the expected crowds of more than one million people.

bart workers have delivered a 72-hour strike notice to bart management, which means a potential strike could begin as early as monday morning. bart management and the leaders of the two unions that represent workers were back at the bargaining table last night although an agreement has not been reached, the two sides seem to be coming closer to a resolution. bart management says that there are new proposals on the table about workers pay, health care, and pension benefits. union members say they have offered their own ideas. the details of the talks have not been made public, but all sides are interested in reaching an agreement and avoiding a strike. contract negotiations will resume today. the deadline for the end of talks is monday at midnight, that is when the contracts expire. union officials are holding a press conference in oakland this morning at 10- am. regional transit officials are warning people of major gridlock on bay area roads if the strike does happen. the metropolitan transportation commission was talking about the possible fall-out. bart has about four- hundred

- thousand riders a day. including 96 -thousand who travel across the bay in the trans bay tube during peak commute hours. that's 50- percent more commuters than in 1997 -- when the last bart strike happened. because of that, a bigger impact would be expected if there is a strike this time. the m-t-c is hoping a lot of people can work from home. and if not officials are encouraging car pooling and transportation agencies will be reimbursed to use extra buses and ferries. one alternative bart riders can use to get around is casual carpooling. that's where people line up to get into strangers cars to get across the bay. the program runs between the east bay and downtown san francisco. casual carpooling tends to get more popular during emergencies. transit officials say it helps ease congestion and saves money. and commuters who already use the ferry service can expect boats to be at full capacity. especially during peak commute times. the san francisco bay ferry service will add three additional vessels to their fleet which will allow them to carry 30-thousand additional passengers per day.

>>mark:san francisco pride festivities are this weekend. and after wednesday's historic rulings from the u-s supreme court paving the way for same sex marriage in california, a record number of people are expected to take part in the fun. organizers are anticipating about a million people to take part in all the events. this is video from last year's celebrations. authorities are stepping up security, especially in the wake of the boston bombings. the pride parade starts sunday morning at 10:30 at the corner of market and beale streets in downtown san francisco. this year, congresswoman nancy pelosi and state attorney general kamala harris are expected to attend. police say there will be an even higher priority to making sure nothing goes wrong. police will also be monitoring security cameras placed at different points along the route looking for any suspicious activity. bomb sniffing dogs will also do a sweep before the

>>mark: welcome back to the kron4 morning news. when the u.s supreme court knocked down the defense of marriage act wednesday, so did almost all worries that a bay area man would be deported. kron four's philippe djegal spoke with him and his husband at their home in orinda, where as you might imagine both are in great spirits. >> we were stunned.

stable. one of the former president's daughters said he is still opening his eyes and reacting to the touch of his family. south african's president visited mandela yesterday. crowds continue to gathered outside the hospital for a vigil, singing and dancing. mandela, who's 94, has been on the critical list since sunday. a federal grand jury has indicted ja-har tsarnaev -- the surviving suspect in the boston marathon bombings. the 30- counts accuse ja- har tsarnanev and his brother tamerlan of using weapons of mass destruction and killing four people. three people died in the marathon bombing. the brothers are also accused of killing a m-i-t campus officer. tamerlan tsarnaev died in a gunfight with authorities. 19-year old ja-har was found hiding in a boat. he will be arraigned on july 10-th in the u-s- district court in boston. a judge has denied bail for former new england patriot's tight end aaron

hernandez. in an astonishing fall from grace - he's facing first degree murder charges in the death of a friend. hernandez was in court yesterday, listening as attorneys argued over whether he's a flight risk. prosecutors say the evidence against him is "overwhelming.". saying he orchestrated the execution of semi-pro player odin lloyd earlier this month -- after the two had spent the evening at a night club. the defense tried unsuccessfully today to get hernandez out on bail. >>mr. hernandez is not looking for any special treatment from this court. he doesn't deserve any special treatment. he should be treated like any other defendant. he's not a risk of flight, if the equities are in his favor because he has no prior record, he has a stable family situation, he's a member of the community, has a solid employment record, if those equities exist in his favor he should get bail. >>mark:that argument didn't work and hernandez is back in jail. and a shocking report says that investigators are now looking into whether he's connected to a double

congress is working on a deal to prevent a 100- percent hike in subsidized student loan interest rates. a move that could affect 7 - million college students. yesterday, a group of senate democrats announced a plan that would maintain the current interest rate for one year. the plan would pay for the extension of the current rate by cutting a tax break on tax- deferred retirement accounts. if an agreement is not reached, subsidized student loan rates will double july first. the imminent rate hike only applies to loans taken out after that deadline. according to freddie mac, rates on 30-year fixed-rate home loans spiked to an average of 4-point-46- percent this week. the largest weekly increase in more than 26 years. an extra percentage point will cost home-buyers with 30-year fixed-rate mortgages 56-dollars more a month for

the contra costa county sheriffs office have confiscated nearly one hundred weapons in just the pass month. it was the result of a task force with the sheriff's office, the californina department of justice,the highway patrol and the pittsburgh police.

the goal was to arrest those prohibted from owning firearms. in addition to the weapons more than thirty thousand rounds of ammunition were confiscated. fourteen people were also arrested as a result. it was the largest weapons seizure since the task force started in 2011. this particular case or in all cases when it relates to firearms those that have a demonstrated history of violence or drug trafficking are going to use these weapons for illegal reasons. and these were just the highlights for the month of may, these three cases that are outlined this morning. in the south bay, the former treasurer of a san jose been charged with embezzling 27-thousand dollars from the group. keith dennis is accused of forging checks for expenses from p-t-a fundraisers and place at lynhaven elementary school. dennis, who has children who attend lynhaven, served as the p-t-a's volunteer financial secretary from 2009 to 2012. if convicted, dennis could spend at least four years in prison. that was the santa clara county bomb squad

detonating three chinese- war two era grenades yesterday. the grenades were found in a box inside a home on chelsea drive in san jose. authorities decided the military grenades were too unstable to move to another location. so the bomb squad blew up the grenade inside a makeshift bunker dug in the front yard of the house. residents in the area were evacuated. firefighters also shut off gas to the home as precaution. there were no injuries. the lead attorney who was slated to determine how much p-g-and e should be fined for the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion has removed himself from the case. the california public utilities commission released details that frank lindh, who was working as the chief advisory attorney for the c-p-u-c , was in fact a former attorney for p-g-and- e. lindh reportedly disagreed with other attorneys on the investigation about how much money p-g and- e should be fined for the deadly explosion. those attorneys who were the main experts on case were removed. but following lindh's departure from the case,

they will now be put back on the investigation. berkeley police are searching for a man who they say sexually assaulted a woman inside her home. police say john anthony martin prowled through several rooms in a residential building on piedmont avenue before walking into a woman's bedroom. they say martin touched the woman in an inappropriate way. the victim woke up and started yelling and martin ran away. the suspect is described as six-feet six-inches tall, 280 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. >>erica: it is going to be a hot one today. already seen nine these by noon indicating by red. that's a lot of you in the north bay, delta and possibly out in livermore. putting the clock into motion, '90s will fill land and we will introduce triple digits indicated by purple. fact that would just border the bay area. mainly inland
